HAMILTON, N.Y. - Junior Rachael Bona (Coon Rapids, Minn.) recorded three points, including two goals, to lead the No. 1 Minnesota women's hockey team to a 3-1 win over Colgate University at Starr Rink Friday night. The win marked the Gophers' NCAA-record 50th-straight victory.

Bona tallied back-to-back goals in the third period, including an unassisted shorthanded effort with 1:51 remaining. Sophomore Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) picked up two points with a goal and an assist, and sophomore goaltender Amanda Leveille (Kingston, Ont.) made 21 saves.

"Tonight was a hard-fought battle," head coach Brad Frost said. "They tested us all the way into the third period, and we had to find a way to win. I thought Amanda Leveille played exceptional. She made a lot of great saves for us."

The Gophers (1-0-0) held Colgate to one-for-eight on the power-play, including killing off two separate 5-on-3 advantages for the Raiders in the second period. Minnesota was scoreless on six power-plays.

"One of our keys is to take three or less penalties per game," Frost said. "We obviously didn't do that tonight, but we still found a way to win."

Minnesota scored three unanswered goals after Colgate (0-1-0) took a 1-0 lead on the power-play just 1:59 into the game. Liz Trautz netted the Raiders' lone goal off assists from Miriam Drubel and Nicole Gass.

Brandt tied the game at the 15:21 mark of the first period on a feed from freshman Kate Schipper (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Bona. The teams took a 1-1 tie into the first intermission, as well as the second break after skating to a scoreless second period.

The Gophers outshot the Raiders, 35-22, including a 16-5 advantage in the third period. Colgate goaltender Ashlynne Rando made 32 saves.

The teams conclude the series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. CT at Starr Rink.
