After splitting matches against Louisville and Boise State last weekend, the Minnesota Golden Gophers switch their focus to the Marquette Golden Eagles, as the two teams will meet on the hard court Saturday night. The match will take place at 5:00 p.m. at the Rochester Athletic Club in Rochester, Minn.
The Maroon and Gold tallied a 1-1 record this past weekend at the Baseline Tennis Center. First, in a back and forth game against the Cardinals, the Gophers came out on top, 4-3. It all came down to the final singles set at the No. 5 position between Alex Gornet and Brendan Ruddock. Ruddock outlasted the Card in a tiebreaker-filled battle.
The next day, Minnesota met Boise State to a different ending. Three individuals notched singles victories but the team failed to win the doubles point, which proved costly in the 4-3 loss to the Broncos. Minnesota now sits 2-5 on the season.
The Gophers, who maintain their No. 44 team ranking in the ITA poll, are led by senior Rok Bonin and sophomore Leandro Toledo. Bonin moved to No. 38 in the most recent singles rankings, while Toledo dropped to No. 111.
Marquette has had a strong start to the season, posting a 5-1 overall mark. With their trip up north, the Golden Eagles are looking to extend their five-match win streak, including a perfect 3-0 weekend last time out. Anchoring the winning effort is junior Dan Mamalat who has collected a 5-1 record from the No. 1 position.
Following this weekend's match against Marquette, Minnesota travels to Madison on Feb. 23 to begin Big Ten Conference play against Wisconsin.
