Gophers Finish Tied for 12th at NCAA Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Minnesota men's indoor track and field team closed out the indoor season on Saturday, tying for 12th at the 2013 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships including three top-five individual finishes on Saturday.
Harun Abda already earned the seventh All-America honor of his career on Friday as part of Minnesota's distance medley relay team (along with Travis Burkstrand, Nick Hutton and Cameron Boy), but the senior added to his list of impressive accolades on Saturday with a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter finals with a time of 1:48.24.
John Simons also finished fifth in the one-mile run finals after posting just the third sub-four minute mile in school history on Saturday. Simons picked up the first All-America accolade (First Team) of his career with a time of 3:59.71 - just short of Simons' personal record set last weekend in South Bend.
The Gophers had a pair of competitors in the weight throw on Saturday with Jon Lehman picking up his first All-America honor with a fifth-place finish at 21.35 meters. Micah Hegerle finished 12th in the weight throw at 20.19 meters to pick up Second Team All-America honors. The Gophers have now had an All-American thrower in each of the last five NCAA indoor championships.
Minnesota closed out the meet with a 12th-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay as Abda, Boy, Jacob Capek and Goaner Deng crossed the finish line at 3:08.65.
A tape delay of the championship will air Sunday, March 17 from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
