Toomey Leads Team USA to Fourth-Place Finish

Senior Derek Toomey swam a personal-best time of 49.7 to lead Team USA to a fourth-place finish in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay final Wednesday at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.
As a team, USA clocked a time of 3:17.60, finishing behind Russia (3:10.88), Australia (3:16.33) and Italy (3:16.64). Earlier in the day, USA won its heat with a time of 3:17.42.
Also competing on the opening day of swimming competition was senior Kyler Van Swol, who placed seventh in the men's 50m butterfly semifinals with a time of 24.21. Van Swol also notched a first-place finish in his heat earlier in the day in 24.30.
Competition at the World University Games continues through July 16.
