MADISON, Wis. (GopherSports.com) - The No. 27 Minnesota men's cross country returned to action on Friday afternoon at the 2014 Wisconsin adidas Invitational, finishing 20th among a stacked field of 36 teams.
MADISON, Wis. (GopherSports.com) - The No. 27 Minnesota men's cross country returned to action on Friday afternoon at the 2014 Wisconsin adidas Invitational, finishing 20th among a stacked field of 36 teams.
No. 6 Syracuse won both the team and individual titles at the eight-kilometer meet at Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, totaling 85 team points while junior Martin Hehir led the competition with a time of 23:55.
With 19 nationally ranked teams in the field, the Gophers totaled 486 points in their first competition in nearly a month.
Junior Aaron Bartnik led the Gophers for the third time this season with a 30th-place finish (29th among scorers), crossing the finish line at 24:11 - less than four seconds off his personal record for an eight-kilometer course and just 16 seconds behind the leader.
Junior Adam Zutz did post a new personal record for the Gophers with a time of 24:31, coming in 83rd overall (81st among scorers) while senior Blayne Dulian finished 108th overall (105th among scorers) with a time of 24:41. Junior Christian Skaret (134th overall, 130th among scorers, 24:51) and true freshman Obsa Ali (145th overall, 141st among scorers, 24:57) rounded out the team's scoring on Friday.
Redshirt freshman Charlie Lawrence (181st, 25:15) and junior Alex Brend (217th, 25:57) also competed for the Gophers but did not factor into the team scoring on Friday.
Minnesota continues the 2014 season at the 2014 Jim Drews Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 18. UW-La Crosse hosts the eight-kilometer meet at the Ettrick Golf Club in Ettrick, Wis.
Wayde Hall, Riley Macon, Brad Woodford, Eric Colvin, Matthew Jergenson, Matt Welch, Derek Wiebke and Cole O'Brien are expected to compete at the event.
