Gophers Set to Host Big Ten Indoors

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota men's tennis team will play in its second-to-last tournament of the fall season this weekend as it hosts the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Championships at the Baseline Tennis Center. The tournament will run Friday through Monday.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. Friday with doubles play. The tournament's first day will exclusively feature doubles competition. Singles play will take place Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Draws for singles will be release Friday afternoon.
The Gophers will send pairings of Mathieu Froment and Jack Hamburg, Felix Corwin and Eric Frueh, and Ruben Weber and Matic ?pec. Froment and Hamburg will receive a bye in the 15-team `A' draw, while Frueh and Corwin will open competition against Marc Herrmann and Chris Hobgarski of Nebraska. Weber and ?pec will compete in the eight-team `B' draw and will play Wisconsin's Josef Dodridge and Jakhongir Jalalov in their first match.
Senior Leandro Toledo will not compete in the tournament. The No. 22-ranked player in the country will conclude his fall season at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 7-10.
LAST YEAR AT THE BIG TEN INDOORS
Minnesota had four student-athletes compete in the 2013 Big Ten Indoor Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. Ruben Weber, who went 3-1 in singles in the tournament, paired with Eric Frueh to reach the semifinal round of the doubles draw, while Jeremy Lynn and Tucker Saxon combined to reach the tournament's second round.
CURRENT GOPHERS AT BIG TEN INDOORS
Current players on the Gophers' roster have combined for a career 11-10 singles record and a career 11-8 doubles mark.
HOSTING THE TOURNAMENT
The last time the Gophers hosted the Big Ten Indoor Championships was Nov. 16-18, 2002 when the Baseline Tennis Center was first opened. In that tournament, three of the tournament's four singles semifinalists were Gophers and third-seeded Thomas Haug reached the championship match. Haug was ranked 64th at the time of the tournament.
GOPHERS' LAST BIG TEN INDOOR CHAMPION
The last Big Ten Singles Tournament champion from Minnesota was Chris Wettengel in 2003. The No. 7-seed senior took down No. 2 Andy Formanczyk from Michigan State, 6-3, 7-6 (2), in the semifinal before upsetting top-seeded Michael Rubin of Michigan, 6-4, 6-4 in the championship. Wettengel did not drop a set in the entire tournament, which was hosted by Michigan.
