Gopher Sports: Why did you decide to attend the University of Minnesota?
Carl Newenhouse: It was the place I could see myself succeeding both in the pool and in the classroom. Additionally, being in a big city while maintaining the college feel of a campus was important to me.
GS: What was your most memorable swimming moment?
CN: Swimming at the Olympic Trials for my club coach, Dave Anderson (a former University of Minnesota coach), who showed me that I could be an elite swimmer.
GS: What is your favorite part of being a Golden Gopher?
CN: Meeting people from all over the country and the world. Seeing foreigners come to America and join our team and realize that this is the greatest country in the world is just an absolute treat.
GS: What is your favorite pre-race song?
CN: I am going to have to go with "The Show Goes On" by Lupe Fiasco. A classic, but a goodie.
GS: What is the best advice you have received from one of the coaches at Minnesota?
CN: "Let's go fast on these" during a stand-up set. It sounded like a good idea to me.
GS: What is your dream job?
CN: Running a company that creates original media content related to sports or entertainment.
GS: What is your favorite post-meet meal?
CN: McDonalds with a big glass of whole milk.
GS: Do you have any hobbies outside of swimming?
CN: I am both an amateur astronomer and magician, but never at the same time. I enjoy writing, watching movies, memorizing useless sports statistics and a good game of hearts or cribbage. Some other activities that bring me enjoyment include throwing various items at ceiling fans, receiving mail and creating a scene in public - only to blame one of my friends for it. Throwing things at ceiling fans has to be my favorite, though.
GS: What do you plan on doing after graduation?
CN: That is a great question. I am certainly open to some suggestions. I'm going to look around and be open to many different possibilities, making sure not to settle for something that won't make me completely happy.
GS: Want to give a shout out to anyone?
CN: I'll give a shout out to Larry Page because maybe he will see this and give me a job. Larry! I've got a lot of great ideas, give me a chance!
