MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Competition at the 2014 Jean Freeman Invite wrapped up today at the newly renamed Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. The invite commemorates the late and legendary Freeman, who coached for the University of Minnesota for over 30 years. Read more about her legacy here.

In addition to the Golden Gophers, teams competing included: Augsburg, Boise State, Carlton College, Concordia, Gustavus, Hamline, Macalester, Minnesota Morris, South Dakota State University, St. Ben's, St. John's, St. Mary's, St. Olaf, St. Thomas, UW Eau Claire (divers only).

EVENTS RECAP

Tori Simenec, Blake Zeiger, Danielle Nack and Becca Weiland combined for a 1:43.51 in the women's 200 medley relay for third place. Minnesota also took sixth in the event.

In the men's 200 medley relay, Daryl Turner, Conner McHugh, Paul Fair and Ryan Miksch finished first with a time of 1:30.96. Minnesota's "B" and "C" relays took third and fourth.

Sophomore Breanne Siwicki finished with a strong 4:15.31 in the women's 400 IM to take first, with Maddie Hoch following for third with a time of 4:22.30. Seniors Tori Simenec (4:23.59) and Devin Ste. Marie (4:33.51) finished fourth and seventh respectively.

Golden Gophers Alex Cisneros and Nick Hatanaka picked up first and second in the men's 400 IM. Cisneros finished with a 4:00.83, while Hatanaka had a 4:01.94. CJ Smith followed suit with a 4:05.72 for fourth place, while Logan Redondo picked up fifth with a time of 4:08.77.

Senior Kiera Janzen picked up a second-place finish in the women's 100 freestyle, finishing with a time of 51.36. Gophers Katelyn Holmquist and Ellen Bloom finished ninth and tenth with times of 52.36 and 52.77. Freshman Brooke Zeiger placed 14th with a time of 54.00.

Jon Thielen finished the men's 100 free with a time of 46.03 for first place. Thielen was followed by teammate Ryan Miksch who finished with a time of 46.18. Placing fourth was Erick Huft with a time of 46.78. Niklas Brinck finished sixth with a time of 47.73.

Jessica Plant led Minnesota to a second-place finish in the women's 100 back. Plant finished with a time of 57.31. Senior Becca Weiland followed with a 57.78 for fourth place. Freshman Danielle Nack placed tenth with a time of 58.61 and Chloe Portela placed 13th with a 1:00.07.

The Golden Gophers swept the men's 100 backstroke, taking places first through fourth. Daryl Turner led the way with a 49.14 for first place. Noah Busch (51.20), Jack Tribble (51.84) and Andrew Hartbarger (51.90) followed suit.

In the women's 200 breast, Samantha Harding (2:23.74) and Heidi Busack (2:23.81) finished ninth and tenth. Freshmen Theresa Bushman Bridgette Grobe finished with times of 2:27.09 and 2:28.23 respectively, finishing 13th and 15th.

Lauren Votava led Minnesota in the women's 100 fly. Votava finished with a time of 55.53. Teammates Danielle Nack (55.87) and Maddie Hoch (56.50) followed for fourth and fifth place. Freshman Brooke Zeiger rounded out the championship heat, placing ninth with a time of 59.60.

Sophomore Daryl Turner picked up his third win of the night in the men's 100 fly. Turner finished with a time of 48.07. Chase Bublitz (50.93), Paul Fair (51.04) and Bryce Boston (51.42) finished fourth, fifth and sixth.

DIVING

Lexi Tenenbaum led the Gophers on the women's one-meter, placing first with a total of 301.15 points. Jessica Ramberg (295.25) and Katy Etterman (277.00) followed for second and third.

On the men's three-meter, junior Manny Pollard took first with 406.20 points. Nick Rodriguez took fourth with a total of 259.70.

Dylan Zoe and Erik Larsen led Minnesota to first and second place in the men's platform competition. Zoe totaled 337.75, while Larsen finished with 321.90 points.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

The Golden Gophers will take off for training trips over winter break. While the swimmers head to their annual trip in Hawaii, the Minnesota divers will be spending some time in China. Blogs for both trips will keep you updated on their travels and training. The Minnesota swimmers will take on the University of Hawaii during their stay in the Aloha State on Saturday, Jan. 10.
