Day three prelims have wrapped at Canham Natatorium as the Golden Gophers continue to compete at the 2014 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
The morning included preliminary races for the 400-yard IM, 100-yard Butterfly, 200-yard Freestyle, 100-yard Backstroke, and 100-yard Backstroke. Three-meter diving and the 200-yard Freestyle Relay will also be contested today.
400 IM Prelims
Jakub Maly, who yesterday took 8th in the 200 IM, will be seeded 6th in the championship final tonight after finishing with a time of 3:44.98 in 400 IM.
With a 9th place prelim finish, Brandon Hatanaka will represent the Gophers in the consolation final after swimming a 3:48.66.
Gophers Alex Cisneros and Jon Thielen finished with times of 3:52.58 and 3:54.64 respectively, and will head to the `C' final tonight.
100 Fly Prelims
Kyler Van Swol will be seeded second in tonight's championship final of the 100-yard butterfly. The senior finished with a time of 46.19.
200 Free Prelims
Ben Bravence led the Gophers finishing with a time of 1:37.06 in the 200-yard freestyle. The sophomore will head to the `C' final tonight.
100 Breast Prelims
Nick Hatanaka had the best Minnesota finish with a B NCAA qualifying time of 55.11 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
100 Back Prelims
Freshman Daryl Turner will head to the consolation championships of the 100-yard backstroke after swimming a 48.05 in prelims. In his first season for the Gophers, Turner has been a valuable asset to the team.
In the `C' final tonight, Chris Johnson will swim for the Gophers. Johnson finished with a time of 48.47 in the preliminary 100-yard backstroke.
Three-meter diving is underway in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In his first semester with Minnesota, Matt Barnard will be competing in tonight's final after scoring a total of 365.60 points. Manny Pollard and Dylan Zoe will be competing in the consolation finals that are set to begin later this afternoon in Michigan.
The Gophers head into Friday night in 5th place with 141 points. The team has had a fourth-place or better finishes every year since 1989, and will be looking to continue the streak as the last two days of competition continue.
