Toomey Takes Down MN, B1G Record

The Golden Gophers arrived in Austin, Texas on Tuesday ready to compete in the 2014 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships March 27-29. The Minnesota roster includes Matt Barnard, Paul Fair, Ian Gordon, Nick Hatanaka, Jakub Maly, CJ Smith, Derek Toomey, Daryl Turner, and Kyler Van Swol.
The Gophers competed in five events during prelims, sending the 200 free relay and 50 free to finals.
200 Free Relay
During prelims, the relay team of Derek Toomey, Daryl Turner, Paul Fair and Ian Gordon kicked off the NCAA Championships with a prelim time of 1:17.44, seeding them 9th for finals. Derek Toomey became the first Big Ten Conference swimmer ever to break under 19 seconds, finishing with a split of 18.95.
The Gophers placed 13th in the 200 free relay finals with a time of 1:18.42.
200 IM
Big Ten Freshman of the Year Jakub Maly set a new personal record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:44.76 for 27th place. Maly is only .12 seconds away from knocking down the Minnesota school record in the event. Jakub will be competing in the 400 IM, his favorite event, on Friday.
50 Free
Senior captain Derek Toomey established a 19.10 during the 50 free prelims to be seeded 7th in the finals.
During finals Toomey matched his Big Ten Championship Title time 19.05 during the 50 free finals for fourth place in the event.
400 Medley Relay
Daryl Turner, Nick Hatanaka, Kyler Van Swol, and Derek Toomey placed 17th in the 400 medley relay prelims with a time of 3:09.47. The team dropped 1.45 seconds from the seeded time.
1 Meter Diving
Matt Barnard competed in the 1-meter diving event this afternoon, adding up a total of 281.00 points for 31st place. The freshman is most looking forward to the platform diving event, which will take place on Saturday.
After tonight's finals, the Gophers have a total of 23 points and are currently in 18th place.
