EUGENE, Ore. - Minnesota junior Devin Stanford used a personal-best throw of 198-3 (60.44m) to finish 15th and earn Second Team All-American honors in the hammer throw at the 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., Wednesday afternoon.

Stanford earned her lifetime-best mark on her first throw at the championships. After entering the event seeded 22nd at 58.51m, Stanford improved her previous best mark (196-7, 59.92m) by nearly two feet to finish 15th (198-3, 60.44m) and move into second among Gopher throwers all-time.

"It was an exciting competition for Devin today, and she did a great job of executing," director of women's cross country and track & field Matt Bingle said. "She was really relaxed in the national championship environment, so it was fun to see her just let it go and compete well. She's had a solid year and been a great leader for us, and coach Peter Miller has done a great job of developing her this year.

"Being a junior and being in this position is great for Devin and for our team. Hopefully it will catapult her to a strong summer and some even better things next year."

Making her NCAA championships debut, Stanford became the first Gopher thrower to compete on the national stage since Nikki Tzanakis finished 14th in the discus in 2011. She is the first hammer thrower to advance to the NCAA finals since Liz Alabi in 2007.

The NCAA championships continue through Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Minnesota's 4x400-meter relay team of Titania Markland, Jessica Waldvogel, Te'Shon Adderley and Megan Geyen will race in the national semifinal at 8:40 p.m. CT Thursday evening with the 4x400m relay final set for 5:55 p.m. CT Saturday.
