Gophers Announce 2015 Track Schedule

MINNEAPOLIS (Gophersports.com) - The 117th season of Gopher men's track & field at the University of Minnesota will be highlighted by a trio of home meets for the Maroon & Gold starting Jan. 10 with the Northwest Open.

"It's always exciting to start our indoor season with a couple of home meets and to be able to build momentum heading into the season," Minnesota Director of Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. "Overall, we've got a great schedule that will test our team throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons, and we're excited to start things up in January. "

Along with the Northwest Open, the Gophers will also host the Jack Johnson Invitational, Jan. 30-31, as well as the Snowshoe Open on Feb. 20. All home meets will be held at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.

The Gophers will also compete in a dual at Wisconsin on Jan. 24 along while the team will split up for three meets over Valentine's weekend at the Husky Classic in Seattle, the Iowa State Classic and the UW-River Falls Invite. Minnesota will also send competitors to the Beth Open and the Bison Open on Feb. 7.

The indoor season moves to the championship schedule starting Feb. 27-28 with the 2015 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio before the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., March 13-14.

The outdoor season kicks off soon after with the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., March 20-21, followed by the Stanford Invite, April 3-4. Minnesota then splits up for the Hamline Invite and the Texas Invite on April 11. The Maroon & Gold heads to Walnut, Calif., for the Mt. SAC Relays, April 17-19, while a contingency of Gophers will also head to Concordia St. Paul's Holst Invitational on April 18.

The annual Drake Relays are scheduled for April 23-25 while the Gophers throwers will head to the Triton Invite in San Diego on April 25.

"We've had quite a lot of success at the Drake Relays over the last few years, and it's always one of the meets our guys get excited for each year. There's great competition, and it's always an exciting event," Plasencia said.

A trio of local meets are also on the docket for late in the outdoor season with the Macalester Twilight on April 23, the Golden Bear Twilight on April 29 and the Meet of the UnSaintly on May 1-2.

May will also see the Gophers head to the Musco Twilight on May 1-2, the Payton Jordan Invite in Palo Alto on May 3, and the Mark Messersmith Invitational in Cedar Falls, Iowa and the NDSU Tune-Up Meet , both on May 8.

The outdoor championship season kicks off with the 2015 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships in East Lansing, Mich., May 15-16 with the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Outdoor Championships First Round set for May 28-30 in Austin, Texas. Those who advance will head to Eugene, Ore., for the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Second Round on June 10-13.
