Sophomore Jose Mendez will take a three-shot lead into the final round of the Windon Memorial Classic. The Golden Gophers are in 10th place as a team, three shots out of sixth, through 36 holes in Skokie, Ill.
Minnesota shaved one point off its morning score and turned in a combined 577 (+17) on the day. Teams are tightly packed entering the final round, as sixth- through 13th-place are all between 14-over and 20-over. California (+4) has an edge over Ohio State and Michigan (+5) at the top of the leaderboard.
"Jose was great today," head coach John Carlson said. "It's really a theme with him. Clearly he has established himself as one of the top players in the nation. He will be comfortable tomorrow, having won three times in his freshman year, including the Big Ten Championship. As a team, we weren't good off the tee today, and playing from the rough at Evanston GC is a tall order. These days are tough as a team, but all five guys have the ability to post a low score tomorrow."
Tyler Lowenstein and Daniel Luftspring are tied for 48th. The pair had a 7-over day in windy conditions. Lowenstein went 1-under on par-3 holes Sunday, tied for the best in the field. Overall, the Gophers were 5-over on par-3s, second-best of the 15 teams.
Matt Rachey (+8) scored twice for Minnesota on Sunday and is tied for 60th. Rúnar Arnorsson (+13) rounded out the Gophers' lineup.
