The Golden Gophers will look to gain some ground on Saturday at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. Through 36 holes in Albuquerque, the Golden Gophers are tied for 14th place.
Jose Mendez, at 3-over-par, is tied for 24th. He posted a 1-under 71 in Friday's early round and was tied for ninth heading into the afternoon, then carded a 76 in the second round.
Minnesota is 33-over as a team, tied with Louisiana. Host New Mexico (-22) is leading its tournament in by 15 strokes over San Diego State. The Lobos' Gavin Green tops the leaderboard with a 9-under 36-hole score.
The Gophers' second- and third-best scores of the day were Rúnar Arnorsson's 74 and Jon DuToit's 75, both in the first round. DuToit's second round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 first hole. He is tied for 55th going into Saturday's final round. Arnorsson (+10) is tied for 66th.
Both Daniel Luftspring and Tyler Lowenstein lowered their scores in the second round, Luftspring with a 77 after an 80 and Lowenstein with a 79 after an 83.
