HONOLULU, Hawaii - Technical issues delayed results from the dual between Hawaii and Minnesota, but the Golden Gophers picked up a win for both the men and women.
Minnesota kicked off the meet placing first in both the men's and women's 200 medley relay.
Freshman Brooke Zeiger led Minnesota in the 1000 freestyle, finishing first with a time of 10:07.85. Teammates Samantha Harding (10:09.65) and Brooke Lorentzen (10:16.01) followed allowing the Gophers to go 1-2-3.
Senior CJ Smith placed first in the men's 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:13.43. Logan Redondo and Garin Marlow picked up third and fourth place with time of 9:33.40 and 9:39.14 respectively.
The Gopher women took first, second and third in the 200 freestyle as well. Junior Lauren Votava led the way, finishing with a time of 1:49.46. Tori Simenec finished with a 1:50.11 for second, followed by Kiera Janzen (1:50.83) for third.
Freshman transfer Michael Nunan shined in his Gopher debut, placing first in the men's 200 freestyle. Nunan finished with a time of 1:39.76. Paul Fair (1:41.13) and Erik Huft (1:43.67) finished fourth and fifth.
Katelyn Holmquist picked up a first-place finish in the women's 100 backstroke. Freshman Isabel Wyer took third with a time of 1:00.59, and Ellen Bloom finished fifth with a time of 1:01.29.
The Gopher men went 1-2-3 in the men's 100 back with sophomore Daryl Turner leading the way with a 50.09. Seniors Chris Johnson (51.74) and Carl Newenhouse (52.21) followed taking second and third.
Kierra Smith finished the women's 100 breast with a time of 1:03.36 for first. Freshman Rae Bullinger picked up fourth with a 1:08.34.
Freshman Conner McHugh finished second in the men's 100 breast, finishing with a time of 57.50. Nick Hatanaka (57.59) and Spencer Mattox (57.68) followed for third and fourth.
Another 1-2-3 for the Gopher women occurred in the 200 butterfly. Freshman Danielle Nack led the pack with a 2:03.08. Devin Ste. Marie (2:04.82) and Maddie Hoch (2:05.98) followed for second and third respectively.
The Minnesota men followed suit, placing first, second and third in the men's 200 fly as well. Brandon Hatanaka finished first with a time of 1:52.17, followed by Ben Bravence (1:52.53) and Nick Orf (1:52.54).
Becca Weiland led Minnesota in the women's 50 freestyle. Weiland finished with a time of 23.50 for second, followed by Alli Schumacher (24.48) and Blake Zeiger (24.57) for third and fourth.
Sophomore Daryl Turner picked up his second individual win of the day in the men's 50 freestyle, finishing with a time of 20.37. Noah Busch (21.50) and Ian Gordon (21.73) finished third and fourth in the event.
In the women's 100 freestyle, Lauren Votava finished first with a time of 50.61. Becca Weiland followed suit, taking second with a 51.03. Freshman Danielle Nack picked up fourth with a time of 52.64.
Sophomore Paul Fair took home the gold in the men's 100 freestyle. Fair finished with a time of 45.57. Ryan Miksch (46.70) placed third, while Noah Busch (47.05) took fourth.
Another 1-2-3 for the Gopher women occurred in the 200 backstroke. Freshman Brooke Zeiger took home her second individual win of the day with a time of 2:03.74. Jessica Plant and Maddie Hoch followed for second and third.
The Gopher men matched the women, picking up first through third in the men's 200 back as well. Senior Carl Newenhouse led the way with a time of 1:50.36. Andrew Hartbarger (1:51.39) and Chris Johnson (1:52.74) placed second and third respectively.
Kierra Smith swept the breaststroke competition when she picked up first in the women's 200 breast. Smith finished with a time of 2:12.47. Senior Heidi Busack finished second with a time of 2:27.64, and freshman Rae Bullinger took fourth with a 2:29.34.
Freshman Conner McHugh placed first in the men's 200 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 2:05.22. Nick Hatananka and Spencer Mattox followed for second and third.
Minnesota then opted to swim exhibition for the remainder of the meet.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS
The Gophers will head to Raleigh, North Carolina to take on N.C. State in a two-day dual. The meet will take place on January 23 and 24, more information to come.
