The University of Minnesota men's and women's track & field programs held a track clinic for members of the Little Earth Youth Development Program (YDC) yesterday afternoon at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
Hosting approximately 20 kids from the South Minneapolis area, Gopher track athletes held four stations to showcase their sport in hurdles, discus/javelin, long jump and relay starts. Broken up into four groups, the children learned a few basic track techniques and talked to them about their track careers and living healthy lifestyles. Following the event, the kids received healthy snacks, posters and had a chance to look around inside the fieldhouse.
Helping with the track clinic was Obsa Ali, Lisa Bailey, Elizabeth Berkholtz, Kate Bishop, Emily Castanias, Jordan Charles, Paige D'Heilly, Anne Ferguson, Wayde Hall, Nicole Heitzman, Ally McSherry, Liz Miller, Patty O'Brien, Paige Peschel, Matthew Rosen, Kaila Urick, Tess Wasowicz, Violet Weibel, Laura Werking and Derek Wiebke.
Little Earth was founded in 1973 and created affordable housing in South Minneapolis. As the first urban housing complex with Native preference, Little Earth serves as a national model at the forefront of American Indian migration into urban areas. The Little Earth youth program focuses on five core programs: Character and Leadership development, education and career development, health and life skills, arts and sports and recreation.
