Minnesota Suffers First Loss at No. 3 UNC

In their third-ever appearance at the prestigious event, the Gophers dropped to 2-1 on the season with the defeat.
UNC opened the match with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, but juniors Julia Courter and Paula Rincon-Otero answered with an impressive showing at No. 2, downing Caroline Price and Jamie Loeb, 6-2. The Tar Heels eventually staked claim to the first point when No. 13 duo Kate Vialle and Ashley Dai outlasted Tereza Brichacova and Mehvish Safdar, 6-3, at the top position.
In singles, North Carolina padded its lead with a Whitney Kay win over Aria Lambert at No. 4. No. 22-ranked Price then cemented a triumph over Jessika Mozia at No. 3. Host UNC sealed the win at the No. 6 position, where Dai defeated Rincon-Otero.
Minnesota players Brichacova (No. 1), Caroline Ryba (No. 2) and Maja Vujic (No. 5) did not finish their matches. Vujic was leading her match when play was stopped after a 6-2 set win over Vialle.
The Gophers cap competition at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C. Sunday when they face No. 59 Boston College. The Eagles fell, 4-3, to No. 37 LSU Saturday.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 73 Minnesota women's tennis team lost for the first time in 2015 Saturday, dropping a 4-0 contest to third-ranked North Carolina in the first match of ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
