No. 23 Gophers Place 15th at Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. - The No. 23 Golden Gophers placed 15th in the team standings led by senior Liz Berkholtz's 36th place finish at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational Friday afternoon. Berkholtz was just six seconds shy of her 6K career-best time, clocking a time of 20:22.7.
Among the 14 Gophers who raced at the adidas Invitational, eight ran career-best 6K times.
Only 22 seconds separated the top four Gopher finishers. Haley Johnson was the second Gopher finisher in a career-best 20:40.8 for 67th place, followed by Kaila Urick (20:52.5) in 86th and Madeline Strandemo in a career-best 20:54.1 for 91st place.
Tamara Gorman was Minnesota's fifth runner in 149th place in a career-best 21:26.1. Jamie Piepenburg (21:32.1) and Emily Betz (21:32.6) rounded out Minnesota's finishers in the "A" race.
No. 23 Minnesota secured its 15th-place finish with 429 points, just eight points behind No. 25 Princeton and No. 13 Michigan State in a tie for 13th.
Top-ranked New Mexico placed five runners in the top 10 en route to the team title with 32 points. No. 11 Arkansas (188), No. 17 Virginia (217), No. 12 North Carolina State (240) and No. 3 Providence (264) completed the top five teams.
Minnesota finished fifth in the open race led by Stacey Swatek (21:32.9) and Patty O'Brien (21:39.3) with career-best times in the top 20, placing 14th and 18th, respectively. Taylor Mikkalson (21:49.4) and Tess Wasowicz (22:05.9) also recorded career-best times in 23rd and 29th, respectively.
The Gophers also have a group racing at the Tori Neubauer Invitational hosted by UW-La Crosse on Saturday afternoon. The women's 6K race is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. CT at Ettrick Golf Club in Ettrick, Wis., following the men's 8K race at 11:30 a.m. CT.
