Gophers Earn Sweep on the Road

The No. 11 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Maryland, tonight, in College Park, Md. Minnesota (12-3, 4-1 in the Big Ten) won 25-23, 25-16, 25-19.
As a team, the Golden Gophers hit .268, while they limited Maryland to .122. Minnesota had 9.5 blocks to the Terps' five and added six aces. Daly Santana had 14 kills, hit .370 and had a team-high eight digs, while Paige Tapp hit .400 with seven kills, committed one error in 15 attempts and provided two aces. Sarah Wilhite had five kills and two aces. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 28 assists.  
Minnesota returns to action Sunday, as the Gophers travel to Rutgers for a 1 p.m. CT match.
Set Breakdown:
 Set 1: The Gophers utilized five blocks in the set, including set point, to take a 25-23 win. The two teams exchanged points until the 18-18 mark when Seliger-Swenson added a kill. Maryland took a two-point lead off two kills at 20-18 as Minnesota called a timeout. After a three-point lead, Minnesota came back with two Paige Tapp kills as Maryland called a timeout at 21-20. Minnesota tied the set at 22 on a Maryland service error and attack error as the Terps used their second timeout. As Maryland took a 23-22 lead off a kill, Minnesota responded with three-straight points to finish off the set. Santana had a kill, followed by an ace by Paige Tapp and a block from Hannah Tapp and Seliger-Swenson for a 1-0 lead.
Set 2: Minnesota took the second set, 25-16. Minnesota opened the second set trailing 3-1, but came back and went on a six-point run. Taking an early 7-3 lead, the run was capped off with back-to-back kills from Paige Tapp. Minnesota would later go up, 12-6, off a Seliger-Swenson/P Tapp block. After Maryland closed the gap to two at 14-12, Minnesota went on a 4-1 run for an 18-13 lead as the Terps called their second timeout. Minnesota would continue to add to the lead as the Gophers had an ace by Katie Schau for a 21-15 lead. After a Maryland service error, Minnesota closed out the set with a Santana kill, a Wilhite ace and a Maryland attack error to take a 2-0 lead.
Set 3: Minnesota hit .379 in the final set to take a 25-19 win and the match. Maryland took an 8-4 lead off a kill and an ace before Minnesota called a timeout. With the Gophers trailing 9-5, Minnesota regrouped and strung together a 6-1 run to tie the set and take an 11-10 lead before the Terps called a timeout. Trailing 10-9, Minnesota had two kills from Santana and an ace by Paige Tapp for the lead. Out of the break, Maryland would tie the set. The two teams would trade points until Minnesota had a triple block (Wilhite/P Tapp/Beal), followed by a Wilhite kill for a 16-14 lead. Maryland used its second timeout after Wilhite put the lead to 18-15. A Seliger-Swenson/P Tapp block and a Wilhite ace put the lead to 21-16. Hannah Tapp put the match at set point, while Maryland ended the match off an attack error for a 3-0 win.
