DULUTH, Minn. - Minnesota's pentathletes got an early start to the 2016 season, competing at the Opener hosted by the College of St. Scholastica on Friday. Jess Herauf won the pentathlon title with 4,242 points, followed by Alex Beckman (3,497), Audra Winter (3,475), and Amanda Beckman (3,248) claiming the top four places, respectively.
Herauf's 4,242 points was just 130 points shy of her Minnesota program record set at 4,372 points at the 2015 Big Ten Championship. She won all five events and recorded indoor career-best marks in the long jump (6.06m, 19-10.75) and shot put (13.88m, 45-06.5). She also set St. Scholastica facility records in high jump (1.73m, 5-08), long jump, and pentathlon overall.
Alex Beckman's second-place finish saw her score 3,497 points behind second-place finishes in the high jump (1.67m, 5-05.75), shot put (11.63m, 38-02.00), and 800m run (2:34.06).
Audra Winter earned three top-three finishes en route to her third-place overall showing. She placed second in the 60m hurdles (8.99) and third in both high jump (1.67m, 5-05.75) and shot put (11.18m, 36-08.25). Winter made her first appearance since placing 10th in the heptathlon at the 2015 Virginia Challenge (April 17-18).
Amanda Beckman scored 3,248 points for fourth place. She placed second in the long jump at 5.32m (17-05.50) along with fourth-place finishes in the shot put (10.32m, 33-10.25), high jump (1.52m, 4-11.75), and 800m run (2:35.19).
Gophers rookies Rachel Schow and Kayla Nelson competed unattached at the meet as well. Schow scored 2,727 points for seventh place while Nelson was ninth with 2,572 points.
The Gophers host their annual intrasquad meet at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse next Friday, Dec. 11, before officially opening the season by hosting the Minnesota Open on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016.
