Wieland Wins Heptathlon in Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. (GopherSports.com) - Luca Wieland and Jamie Crum finished first and second, respectively, in the heptathlon this weekend to kick off the season at St. Scholastica's The Opener.
Wieland, the defending Big Ten and NCAA heptathlon champion and the school record holder in the event (6,070 points), totaled 5,789 points over the two-day event to set a new meet record and notch the second-highest point total in school history while Crum recorded 5,064 points in second place.
A native of Saarbrucken, Germany, Wieland led the field in six of seven events at The Opener with event wins in the pole vault (4.60 meters, 15-01.00 ft.), the 60-meter hurdles (8.17), the high jump (2.03 meters, 6-08.00 ft.), the long jump (7.44 meters, 24-05.00 ft.), the shot put (14.41 meters, 47-03.50 ft.) and the 60-meter dash (7.00). Wieland also finished fourth in the 1,000 meters (2:58.96).
A Greenwood, Minn., native, Crum posted a win in the 1,000 meters (2:51.49) and a trio of runner-up showings in the high jump (1.97 meters, 6-05.50 ft.), the long jump (6.41 meters, 21-00.50 ft.) and the shot put (13.12 meters, 43-00.50 ft.). Crum also finished third in the 60-meter dash (7.35) and the pole vault (4.10 meters, 13-05.25 ft.) and fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.85).
