MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Already honored as the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week, defending NCAA and Big Ten heptathlon champion Luca Wieland has now been tabbed as the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week following his performance in last weekend's indoor season opener.

The Saarbrucken, Germany native posted a nation-best 5,789 points to win the heptathlon at St. Scholastica's "The Opener" over the weekend, winning six of the seven events along the way. The mark ranks second all-time at Minnesota behind Wieland's 6,070 points to win last year's NCAA indoor title and was two points better than his Big Ten championship-clinching score of 5,787 last year.

The All-American led the field with event wins in the pole vault (4.60 meters, 15-01.00 ft.), the 60-meter hurdles (8.17), the high jump (2.03 meters, 6-08.00 ft.), the long jump (7.44 meters, 24-05.00 ft.), the shot put (14.41 meters, 47-03.50 ft.) and the 60-meter dash (7.00). Wieland also finished fourth in the 1,000 meters (2:58.96).

His 60-meter dash time was a personal record.
