AMES, Iowa - Gopher junior Kimberly Golding broke the Minnesota women's track & field program record in the 60-meter hurdles, and redshirt sophomore sprinter Erin Hawkins moved into second in Gopher history in the 200-meter dash on day one of the Iowa State Classic Friday.

Golding ran a career-best 8.52 seconds in the 60-meter hurdle preliminary to advance to Saturday's final. Freshman Emma Spagnola also advanced to the final with a time of 8.61 seconds. Spagnola and Golding have each improved on Minnesota's program record this season; Spagnola now ranks second all-time at 8.55 seconds.

In the 200m final, Hawkins dropped 0.22 seconds from her personal best with a first-place time of 24.14 seconds to win the event by 0.24 seconds and secure her fifth individual event title of the season. Kat Keller placed ninth in the 200m with a career-best time of 25.10 as well. Hawkins also advanced to Saturday's final in the 60-meter dash tying for the top time in prelims with a 7.53.

The 5,000-meter final saw redshirt juniors Liz Berkholtz and Megan Bailey represent the Gophers. Berkholtz ran a season-best 16:52.16 for 25th place while Bailey clocked a career-best 17:51.68.

The Gophers also competed in event finals in the high jump and long jump Friday. Freshman Heta Tuuri led the way in the high jump with a fourth-place jump of 1.77 meters, and redshirt junior Alex Beckman was seventh (1.68m). Spagnola finished sixth in the long jump with a mark of 5.58 meters as well.

Action at the Iowa State Classic continues Saturday. Redshirt sophomore Jamie Piepenburg and redshirt freshman Danielle Anderson start the day for Minnesota, running the women's 3,000-meter run at 9:30 a.m.

Tseng Wins Pole Vault at St. Thomas Showcase

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota also had student-athletes competing at the St. Thomas Showcase in St. Paul, Minn., Friday evening. Sara Tseng picked up Minnesota's lone event title with a win in the pole vault at 3.60 meters. Alex Flucke was second with a career-best mark of 3.60m as well, and Allie Funk was eighth (3.30m).

Chelsea Pettit led a charge of six Gophers in the mile, finishing eighth in a season-best 5:17.08. Sarah Klecker (5:21.33), Naomi Ollila (5:28.15) and Hannah Trasser (5:29.39) followed in ninth through 11th, respectively. Klecker, Ollila, Violet Weibel (5:40.30) and Laura Werking (5:58.16) all clocked career-best times.

The 3,000-meter run saw three Gophers run season-best times. Melissa Cabak place seventh in 10:36.58, followed by Marnie Kinnaird (10:39.78) and Nicole Heitzman (career-best 10:48.80) in ninth and 12th.

Natalie Broome placed 10th in her first collegiate open 400-meter dash in 62.16 seconds as well.

Two Gophers competed in the throwing events. Allie Heifort placed seventh in both the shot put (12.44m) and the weight throw (15.85m), setting a career-best mark in the weight. Nicolle Murphy also competed in the weight throw, placing 11th at 14.32m.

Several Gophers had impressive unattached performances as well, including Patty O'Brien winning the 3,000m (10:09.67), Paige Peschel placing second in the 800m (2:16.97) and Emily Castanias placing second in the mile (5:08.21).
