Kyle Rau scored his 150th career point with a power-play goal seven minutes in and added a short-handed goal and an even-strength goal for good measure to pick up the hat trick as the Gopher Hockey program picked up the 300th win at Mariucci Arena with a 6-2 win over No. 12 Michigan on Friday night.
While Rau notched his second career hat trick, Mike Reilly set a new career high with four points on the night as the Maroon & Gold stymied the Wolverines' top-ranked offense and held Michigan under four goals for just the second time in 2015.
While the Wolverines brought the nation's top offense into Mariucci Arena, it was the Gophers' top-ranked power play that struck first when Rau scored on the team's first advantage of the game at 6:28 of the first period. Taylor Cammarata and Reilly picked up assists on the goal as Rau became the first Gopher to hit 150 career points since Troy Riddle in 2004.
Minnesota (15-9-3 overall, 6-2-3-0 Big Ten) popped in another pair of goals within 53 seconds late in the period to take a 3-0 lead. Seth Ambroz scored his eighth of the year with a diving swipe at 16:07 after being set up by Travis Boyd and Reilly, and then Vinni Lettieri lit the lamp for the sixth time this season at 17:00 with assists going to Cammarata and Justin Kloos.
The Gophers added to the lead in the second period when Reilly tallied his third point of the night with a goal - his fifth of the year - at 7:19. Boyd and Sam Warning set up the goal. Rau added his second of the night with a short-handed tally at 11:17 with Hudson Fasching and Reilly picked up helpers. The Wolverines tallied their first goal of the night at 18:35 of the second when Cristoval Nieves scored on a Michigan power-play.
Rau completed his hat trick with an unassisted goal at 5:32 to end the night with 12 goals and 29 points on the season as well as 152 points in his career - 27th most all-time at Minnesota. With 59 career goals, Rau is now tied with All-American Larry Olimb and Phil Verchota for 35th all-time at Minnesota. Nieves tallied his second of the night at 14:13 of the third, but the Wolverines would get no closer.
In net for the Gophers, Adam Wilcox made 21 saves to secure the win and move to 15-8-3 on the season.
Reilly ended the night with a goal and three assists with the junior leading all NCAA defensemen this season with 32 points and 27 assists. The Gophers now boast a 15-0-1 all-time record when Reilly tallies multiple points in a game. Meanwhile, Cammarata and Boyd both closed out the night with two assists each.
Minnesota and Michigan close out this weekend's series at 7:05 p.m. CT on Saturday with the series finale on FOX Sports North PLUS, BTN2Go.com, 1500 ESPN and the Gopher Radio Network.
