MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 22 Minnesota women's gymnastics team fell to seventh-ranked Nebraska Huskers, 197.075-196.675, despite earning their second-highest team score of the 2015 season. The meet marked the Gophers' annual Pink Meet where both Nebraska and Minnesota donned pink to raise awareness for breast cancer.
As a team, the Maroon and Gold tied their highest team event score of the evening during the final rotation of the evening as they tallied a 49.400 on floor exercise. The last time the Gophers recorded a 49.400 on an event was on balance beam when Minnesota defeated Michigan State University on Jan. 24. The score would lead the Gophers to their lone team event title of the evening as they outscored Nebraska, 49.400-49.225.
With the loss at home, the Maroon and Gold fall to 3-4 on the season and have a 2-3 conference mark.
Junior Lindsay Mable had a career evening for the Maroon and Gold as she broke her own school record with a 39.675 all-around score en route to her seventh consecutive all-around crown. Mable, who tallied a 39.650 to win the Big Ten all-around title last season, earned two event titles and two second place finishes as she improved to 16 individual titles on the season.
Mable tied her school record floor exercise score as she boasted a 9.975 as the final competitor on Saturday evening at the Sports Pavilion. The Aurora, Colo. native has now earned the floor exercise title at four consecutive meets. She also earned the balance beam title, tallying a 9.925 on the apparatus for the third time this season. With two event titles on the evening, Mable improves to 16 individual event titles on the season.
The Gophers began the first rotation on vault where they tallied a team score of 49.150. Mable earned the highest score of the Maroon and Gold, recording a 9.900, good enough for a tie for second place finish on the event with Nebraska's Jennie Laeng. Sophomore Rachel Haines posted the Gophers' second highest score during the event with a 9.850 marking her highest score of the season on vault.
Minnesota transitioned to uneven bars for the second rotation as Mable continued to pace the Gophers as she scored a 9.875 and earned a second place finish on the event. Jenny Covers tallied a 9.825 for the second highest score for Minnesota. The Maroon and Gold scored a 49 even on the event.
The third rotation saw standout performances from Mable and Haines who earned first and third place tallying 9.925 and 9.875 respectively. Haines earned the third highest score of the evening on the apparatus as the team scored a 49.125 overall.
The excitement continued into the final rotation as the team scored a 49.400 to win the event as a team and Mable earned a school record-tying 9.975 and the individual event title. Senior Cierra Tomson shined as she tallied a season-high and career-high tying 9.900 on the event.
Mable earned the all-around crown as Nebraska's Jessie DeZiel (39.550), Hollie Blanske (39.375) and Grace Williams (38.950) earned the next three spots. Freshman Ciara Gardner competed in all four events for the second weekend in a row to tally a career-best 38.925 on the evening.
Next weekend, the Gophers will compete on both Friday and Sunday. Minnesota will first travel to Iowa State to face the Cyclones for the second time this season before hosting the Best of Minnesota meet on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion.
