Gophers Sweep Meet at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa - The No. 19 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team earned a victory in their first of two meets on the weekend when they traveled to Iowa State University for a rematch of the opening weekend of competition. The Gophers, who scored a 196.350, defeated the Cyclones for the second time this season.
The squad's overall score marked the fourth time in the 2015 season where the Maroon and Gold have scored a 196.000 or above. With the victory on the road, the Gophers improve to 4-4 on the season and continue to hold a 2-3 conference mark.
Minnesota would sweep the event titles as they outscored Iowa State on every event while a Gopher earned the individual event title on every apparatus as well as the all-around crown.
Junior Lindsay Mable earned her eighth consecutive all-around crown as she tallied a 39.625. Mable earned three individual event titles to bring her season total to 19 titles on the season. The Aurora, Colo. native earned season-highs on vault (9.950) and uneven bars (9.900) while she recorded a season-high tying 9.925 on the balance beam for the fourth time this season. Her lowest score of the evening was on floor exercise as she posted a 9.875, good enough for second place. Mable has earned four of the last five floor exercise event titles.
The Maroon and Gold began the evening on uneven bars as Mable and senior Cierra Tomson shined, both earning a season-high 9.900, to tie for first on the event. The win marks Tomson's first title of the season. Senior Jenny Covers tallied a 9.775 to tie for third place while Ciara Gardner added a 9.75 en route to the Gophers' 49.000 team score.
Minnesota earned its highest team score of the evening on vault as each gymnast who participated in the rotation scored a 9.8 or above to combine for a 49.300 overall score. Mable led the way with a season-high 9.950 followed by Covers and Tomson who rounded out the top three scores for the Maroon and Gold as they both contributed 9.85's to the overall tally.
Tomson shined in the third rotation, earning her second individual event title of the season. C. Gardner and Mable followed suit earning a 9.85 to claim second place. Kaitlin Rahon (9.775), Bailie Holst (9.750) and Covers (9.750) all competed for the Gophers and added to the final team score of 49.100.
The final rotation sealed the deal for Maroon and Gold as Mable scored a 9.925 on the balance beam for the fourth time this season. C. Gardner and Rachel Haines tied for second place as they both produced a 9.850.
C. Gardner earned a career-high 39.275 as she competed in the all-around competition for the third time this season posting solid scores across the board. Her season and career best earned her the highest finish in the all-around competition of her career as she ended the night in third place overall.
Minnesota will finish the weekend on Sunday afternoon as it hosts the annual Best of Minnesota meet at 2 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion.
