Maly, Turner Nab Bronze Medals for Gophers

IOWA CITY - Night three of the 2015 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships was highlighted by two bronze medals from the Golden Gophers, both from sophomores. The University of Minnesota is currently in sixth place with 242 points. Michigan (529) has extended its lead over Ohio State (448) by 81 points. Indiana sits in third with 372, Purdue has 252.5 and Wisconsin rounds out the top five with a current score of 250.
The 200 medley relay team of Daryl Turner, Paul Fair, Ian Gordon and Ryan Miksch finished with a time of 1:18.97 for seventh place to begin night three.
Sophomore Jakub Maly broke the Minnesota school record in the 400 IM with a 3:42.54 to take home the bronze. The previous record at Minnesota was set by Alex Wold in 2009 (3:42.61). Seniors Brandon Hatanaka and Andrew Hartbarger took 14th and 15th in the 400 IM respectively. Hatanaka finished with a time of 3:50.98, while Hartbarger posted a 3:53.00.
>Another bronze medal was picked up by the Gophers in the 100 fly. Sophomore Daryl Turner finished with a personal best of 46.52.
Freshman Michael Nunan went 1:35.81 in the 200 freestyle to pick up eleventh place.
Rookie Conner McHugh picked up ninth place in the 100 breaststroke, finishing with a new personal best of 53.05. Eric Sande finished 13th with a time of 54.01.
Spencer Mattox won the C final of the 100 breast, placing 17th with a time of 54.61. Nick Hatanaka finished with a time of 54.79 for 21st place.
Manny Pollard represented Minnesota in the Championship final of three-meter diving. Pollard finished seventh with a total of 398.70 points. Gophers Matt Barnard and Dylan Zoe placed ninth and tenth respectively. Barnard finished with a score of 402.20 and Zoe totaled 386.20 points. Nick Rodriguez finished 15th with 308.80 points.
Earlier in prelims on the three-meter, senior Erik Larsen finished 22nd with 292.15 points. Freshman Daniel Monaghan totaled 249.25 points to place 29th.
Competition resumes tomorrow at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium in Iowa. Preliminary heats of the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast and 200 fly will begin at 11:00 a.m. CT. Three-meter diving prelims will follow at 1:00 p.m. The 1650 freestyle will begin at 4:15 p.m., with the last heat scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m
