ROSEMONT, Ill. - Minnesota men's tennis senior Leandro Toledo was named the Big Ten Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon. The honor is the first of the season for any Gopher and is the fourth of the Hamburg, Germany-native's career.
The accolade is the first of its kind for Toledo since the week of April 8, 2014 when he defeated then-No. 8-ranked Peter Kobelt of Ohio State and then-No. 50 Leonard Stakhovsky of Penn State in singles.
Last weekend, No. 17-ranked Leandro Toledo defeated three ranked singles opponents-No. 77 Michael Tenzer of Green Bay, No. 65 Dovydas Sakinis of Dartmouth and No. 98 Jakob Sude of Oklahoma State-to help Minnesota extend its current winning streak to four matches. He now has five wins over ranked opponents as a senior and 20 in his career. He is 5-1 at the No. 1 singles position this spring.
Toledo also won his lone doubles match to finish, taking down Aman Agarwal and Brendan Tannenbaum of Dartmouth alongside partner Felix Corwin. Together, Toledo and Corwin are ranked 58th. Individually, Toledo is 5-0 in spring doubles matches.
Now standing at 6-1 for the first time since 2011, Minnesota will travel to Wisconsin Saturday to open Big Ten conference play.
