TEMPE, Ariz. (Gophersports.com) - Gian Ferretti kicked off his outdoor career in style on Friday, setting a new University of Minnesota men's track & field record to win the hammer throw at the 2015 Baldy Castillo Invitational.

Through two events, the Gophers currently sit fourth in the team standings behind Ferretti's 10 points. The Maroon & Gold trail Oklahoma's 24, Arizona State's 15 and Texas A&M's 12.

A junior from Cascina, Italy , Ferretti hit 68.72 meters (225-05 ft.) on his second attempt of the afternoon and then upped his personal record to 68.94 meters (226-02 ft.) on his sixth and final throw of the night. Ferretti's mark tops former Gopher All-American Quentin Mege's 67.49 meters (221-05 ft.) for the school record. Mege's performance came at the 2013 Baldy Castillo Invitational.

The performance was more than seven meters ahead of the runner-up and will stand as the top throw in the nation.

"Gian had a great day for us and a tremendous start to his outdoor season with a school record and the best throw in the nation," Minnesota Director of Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. "We've had a lot of success at this meet the last few years, and it was great to see Gian come out firing in this first meet and hit such a high mark."

Also in the hammer throw, Viktor Stelter hit a new personal record to finish 11th at 56.26 meters (184-07 ft.) while Mac Riedy came in 15th at 53.95 meters (177-00 ft.).

The Gophers posted three competitors in the 1,500 meters with Eric Colvin finishing 21st at 3:51.13 for a new personal record, Riley Macon finishing 32nd at 3:54.99 and Wayde Hall coming in 41st at 3:59.84.

The Maroon & Gold continue to compete at the 2015 Baldy Castillo Inviational on Saturday at Sun Angel Stadium.
