LINCOLN, Neb. - The 25th-ranked Minnesota men's tennis team won for the fourth time in its last five matches Sunday, defeating No. 74 Nebraska, 5-2, at the Lincoln Racquet Club in Lincoln, Neb. With their 13th-straight win against the Cornhuskers, the Gophers improved to 12-5 on the season, including 3-0 in the Big Ten.
The victory was also Minnesota's second of the season on the road and seventh over a ranked opponent. The Maroon and Gold has now surpassed its win total from 2014.
For the 14th time this season, the Gophers came out on top in the doubles competition. No. 66 Mathieu Froment and Jack Hamburg got the day started with an 8-6 triumph at No. 1. Matic Spec and Eric Frueh then put Minnesota in front, 1-0, by claiming a win by the same score in the third spot.
Spec continued his impressive freshman campaign at No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory that upped his record in singles to 23-5, including 14-2 on the spring. No. 25-ranked Leandro Toledo kept the Gophers rolling at No. 1 with a three-set defeat of Dusty Boyer.
To seal the team win, Froment won his third-straight singles decision, dispatching Bradford Zitsch at No. 6, 7-5, 6-7 (6), 6-3.
After Felix Corwin added his sixth-consecutive victory to make it 5-0, the Huskers got on the board when Marc Herrmann at Linus Erhart won at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
The Gophers return home, where they are 8-0, next week for a pair of Big Ten matches versus Purdue and No. 39 Indiana. They will then hit the road for four-straight matches.
