MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -
University of Minnesota men's and women's swimming and diving assistant coach Steve Miller announced today that he has decided to resign from coaching. Miller will be pursuing a career outside of swimming, but will forever celebrate his time working with both the staff and student-athletes at the University of Minnesota.

"The University of Minnesota athletic department has undoubtedly shaped me into the person I am today, and for that I am forever grateful," Miller stated.  "I have a tremendous amount of respect for the profession of coaching, however, I feel it's time for me to have a career that allows for a more balanced family life. I want to personally thank Kelly Kremer, the Gopher staff and all of the student-athletes I have had the privilege to work with."

Miller has served the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Minnesota, primarily working with sprinters and middle-distance freestylers. Miller, who was a standout swimmer at Minnesota, spent the previous three seasons as the Gophers' volunteer assistant coach.

"Steve is such a great person, and we have been fortunate to benefit from his years of service to our students and our university," head coach Kelly Kremer stated. "He will be missed not only at Minnesota, but the coaching profession will miss him as well.  While I know our profession cannot afford to lose quality people like Steve, I am happy for him and Jill and that they are pursuing their life plan."

As a collegiate swimmer at Minnesota himself, Miller was a four-time NCAA First Team All-American, earning the distinction twice as a member of the 400 freestyle relay, as well as a member of the Gophers' 200 freestyle relay and the 800 free relay teams. In 2009, Miller and his 200 medley relay team claimed Big Ten Champion honors, helping Miller earn All-Big Ten First Team accolades.

Miller is married to Jillian Tyler, a former Golden Gopher and two-time Canadian Olympian.

"Jill and I intend to be active alumni members and support the program in any way possible," Miller added. "The Gophers are in good hands, and I know the future is looking very bright."

Miller will forever be a part of the Gopher family.
