Gophers Drop Road Decision at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. - The sixteenth-ranked University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team dropped a road decision to No. 2 Louisiana State University in the regular season finale on Friday evening. The meet, held at LSU's Maravich Center, proved to be a tough road test for the Gophers who fell to the Tigers, 198.375-195.450.

The Tigers captured each of the team event wins as well as every individual event title on the evening. The meet marks the first competition of the 2015 season where junior Lindsay Mable did not earn a single event title and her ten consecutive all-around crown streak was broken as Louisiana State's Ashleigh Gnat, Jessie Jordan and Myia Hambrick occupied the top three spots in the all-around competition.

Mable earned a fourth-place finish with a score of 39.375 and did not top a 9.875 on any apparatus. Senior Cierra Tomson competed in all four events for the first time this season tallying a 39.200 followed by freshman Ciara Gardner who recorded a 38.850 on the evening.

Minnesota kicked off its regular season finale on uneven bars where they rebounded on the event from a week ago combining for a team score of 48.700. Mable earned the highest Gopher score of the event when she tallied a 9.875. The score was good enough to earn Mable a tie for second place with LSU's Hambrick and Jessica Savona while Rheagan Courville captured the event title. Tomson who earned a 9.850 to finish in a three-way tie for fifth place followed Mable in terms of Minnesota placements.

During the second rotation, the Golden Gophers earned a team score of 48.950 on the event while the Tigers inhabited first through six places. Senior Jenny Covers earned the Gophers' highest score of the event with a 9.850 while Mable, Tomson, Bailey Gardner and Rachel Haines each recorded a 9.775 to tie for an eighth place finish.

The Maroon and Gold would rotate to floor exercise for the third rotation of the evening.

Mable finished in a three-way tie for fifth place after tallying a final score of 9.875. Tomson finished in eighth followed byBailie Holst and freshmen C. Gardner, Kaitlin Rahon and Abby DeMuse. The team's event score of 49.050 marked their highest team score of the evening.

The Golden Gophers ended the regular season on the balance beam where Mable finished in sixth place with a score of 9.875 while the Tigers dominated the top five. B. Gardner recorded a solid 9.775 as she secured the second-highest Minnesota score behind Mable. The Maroon and Gold combined for a final team score of 48.750.

Minnesota will return to the Sports Pavilion next weekend as the Gophers host Iowa, Michigan, Penn State and Rutgers on Saturday, March 14 at 4 p.m. The Big Ten qualifier decides which session the teams will compete in during the Big Ten Championships the following weekend.
