Gophers Edge No. 24 Drake at Home

MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 34 Minnesota men's tennis team pulled out a 4-3 victory over 24th-ranked Drake at the Baseline Tennis Center Sunday afternoon. The Gophers improved to 10-4 on the season and remained undefeated at home, upping their record in Minneapolis to 7-0.
The victory also gave Minnesota a winning record against ranked opponents. It has now won five of nine matches against top-75 teams.
The match began with the Gophers taking the doubles point for the 12th time in 14 matches. The Bulldogs posted a win at the No. 3 position, but the Gophers rallied when No. 41 Mathieu Froment and Jack Hamburg took down Ben Lott and Bayo Philips at No. 1 and No. 48-ranked Leandro Toledo and Felix Corwin topped Matt Frost and Ravi Patel. Both Minnesota wins came by 6-4 scores.
Toledo and Corwin are now 12-1 together, including a 9-0 ledger in dual matches.
Matic Spec put the Gophers ahead, 2-0, when he became the first singles match to finish. He dispatched Ben Stride, 6-1, 6-2. Drake answered with a win in a match between ranked singles players Toledo and Alen Salibasic at No. 1, but Ruben Weber made it 3-1 when he defeated Patel in straight sets at No. 3.
The Bulldogs proceeded to rally with wins at the No. 6 and 2 positions, but Corwin gave the Maroon and Gold the team win with a three-set triumph in the five spot.
Corwin and Spec are now tied for the team lead in singles wins with 20 apiece. Weber is now 7-3 on the spring.
The Gophers return to the courts March 16 in their final non-conference contest at South Florida. They pick up Big Ten action March 20 at home against Iowa.
