Gophers Retain Little Brown Jug

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 32nd-ranked Minnesota men's tennis team improved to 16-6 and 7-1 in the Big Ten with a convincing 6-1 win over Michigan Saturday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Gophers have now won six of their last seven meetings with the Wolverines, including two this year to maintain possession of the Little Brown Jug.
Continuing its impressive play in doubles, Minnesota took the match's first point for the 18th time in 22 matches this season.
No. 57 Felix Corwin and Leandro Toledo gave the Gophers a solid start with an 8-5 win at No. 2 and 53rd-ranked Jack Hamburg and Mathieu Froment sealed the competition win with an 8-4 triumph in the top spot over Michigan's ranked tandem of Michael Zhu and Alex Petrone.
Toledo, ranked 23rd in singles,kept Minnesota's roll going at No. 1, downing Zhu in straight sets. Hamburg then put the Maroon and Gold on the cusp of victory with a win of his own at No. 5.
With seven wins in a row, Toledo is 8-0 in conference singles play and is 16-5 on the spring season.
No. 97-ranked Matic Spec won his ninth-straight singles contest at No. 2 to clinch the win for the Gophers. Corwin and Froment went on to win at position Nos. 4 and 6, respectively, before the Wolverines got on the board with a win at No. 3.
Before returning home, Minnesota will travel to Michigan State for a Sunday match. The Gophers have beaten the Spartans 19 times in a row.
