Herauf Breaks Minnesota Heptathlon Record

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Redshirt junior Jess Herauf recorded personal best marks in six of seven heptathlon events en route to scoring a Minnesota women's track & field program record 5,912 points to win the heptathlon at the Virginia Challenge this weekend.
After winning the heptathlon high jump (1.69m) and shot put (13.99m), taking second in the 200m (24.79) and finishing sixth in the 100m hurdles (14.57) on Friday, Herauf posted an outdoor career-best jump of 5.77m to win the long jump and a career-best 2:14.21 to win the 800m. She finished second in the heptathlon javelin at 46.27m as well.
Herauf's score of 5,912 points improved upon the previous Minnesota record of 5,892 points held by Liz Roehrig since 2009. She bettered her own career-best score by over 400 points (5,490).
Fellow Gopher heptathletes Alex Beckman (5,062 points) and Amanda Beckman (4,879 points) also earned career-best scores. Alex Beckman placed sixth and ranks fifth in Minnesota history, and Amanda Beckman finished ninth and moved into 10th among all-time Gophers.
Alex Beckman recorded career-best marks in the high jump (1.69m), shot put (12.25m) and 800m (2:27.12). She also set season bests in the 200m (24.87) and the javelin (31.43m).
Likewise, Amanda Beckman earned career-best marks in the 200m (25.32) and long jump (5.58m) and tied her career-best in the high jump (1.60m).
Audra Winter also made her season debut in the heptathlon this weekend, placing 10th with 4,812 points. She recorded a career-best throw of 11.78m in the heptathlon shot put.
In total, the four Gopher heptathletes recorded 16 career-best marks at the Virginia Challenge.
The Gophers also competed at the Holst Invitational hosted by Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday. Next weekend, Minnesota is set to compete at four meets: Hamline Twilight, Drake Relays, UC San Diego Triton Invitational and Macalester Invite.
