Mendez Finishes Third at Iowa

Jose Mendez finished third and the Minnesota men's golf team finished fifth as a team at the Hawkeye-GRE Invitational. Mendez turned in a 54-hole score of 209 (-7) and the Gophers played even-par golf with a team score of 864 for the weekend.
Mendez was under par in all three rounds at Finkbine Golf Course with scores of 71, 69 and 69. He made five birdies and two bogeys in Sunday's final round. The third-place finish was Mendez's fourth top-10 performance of the season and his first in the spring portion of competition.
Riley Johnson joined Mendez in the top 20. He tied for 17th with a 1-over tournament, including a 74 in the last round. Jon DuToit (+2) was close behind and tied for 21st after a 73 on Sunday.
Rúnar Arnórsson and Charlie Duensing also shot 73s today. Arnórsson tied for 32nd (+5), and Duensing for 49th (+12). An eagle on the 15th highlighted Arnórsson's round.
"We picked the right week to build momentum heading into next weekend's Big Ten Championship," head coach John Carlson said. "Our coaching staff witnessed a complete team effort at the Hawkeye. All five players competed hard on every shot. We left a few shots out there each round, which we will address in our last few practices of the regular season. We are ready for Victoria National."
Iowa State (-17) won the tournament. Wichita State's Louis Cohen Boyer captured medalist honors with a 16-under score of 200.
The Big Ten Championships in Newburgh, Ind., run April 24-26. Minnesota won last year at the Pete Dye Course in French Lick, Ind., and Mendez earned co-medalist honors as a freshman.
