LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Golden Gophers collected eight career-best marks in the hammer throw, discus and pole vault to kick off action at day one of the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego Friday.
Four Gophers had personal-best marks in the discus, led by Agnes Esser (54.35m) and Devin Stanford (54.24m) placing fourth and sixth, respectively. Ke-ke Burks finished 15th with a lifetime-best mark of 51.12m. Angie Guenther (42.73m), Megan Petermann (43.86m) and Allie Heifort (career-best 43.51m) also competed in the discus.
In the hammer throw, Guenther (career-best 55.47m), Lyndsey Thorpe (55.45m) and Stanford (55.35m) finished 10th, 11th and 12th, respectively, to lead the Gophers. Kailee Kamps (career-best 53.47m), Burks (52.20m) and Nicolle Murphy (career-best 44.16m) also had solid performances.
"It was an exciting day today," director of women's track & field and cross country Matt Bingle said. "It was a great day for the throwers, highlighted by Agnes' and Devin's big marks this evening in the discus. The whole group of throwers had really great energy and good efforts."
In addition to the success in Friday's throwing events, Allie Funk cleared an outdoor career-best 3.55m to tie for fourth in the open section of the pole vault.
"It was exciting for Allie to have an outdoor PR in the pole vault as well," Bingle said. "I'm looking forward to carrying the momentum from today over to tomorrow."
Members of the Gophers' distance group are also competing at the Drake Relays this weekend. Friday's action at the Drake Relays included the 4x800m relay where Minnesota's team of Stacey Swatek, Anne Ferguson, Ally McSherry and Lauren Domski placed sixth in 8:43.18.
Action at both the Triton Invitational and the Drake Relays continues Saturday.
