INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee has selected the 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams that will compete in the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis championships and Minnesota men's tennis senior Leandro Toledo has earned the Big Ten's automatic qualification bid for the singles competition. Freshman Matic Spec is listed as the second alternate for the tournament.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 20-25 at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas, following the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 14-19.
All matches will be the best-of-three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six-games-all will be used for all matches.
Toledo, who is ranked No. 25 in the latest national singles rankings, is 25-11 on the season with an 18-7 on the spring at the No. 1 position. Named the Big Ten Athlete of the Year, Toledo's 18 wins at the top singles spot match the most by a Gopher since 1995. After becoming Minnesota's first All-American since 2002 last season, he became first four-time all-conference honoree in program history this year.
The Hamburg, Germany native will give Minnesota its 27th all-time appearance in the NCAA Singles Tournament. He reached the third round last season with wins over No. 6 Alex Domijan of Virginia and No. 32-ranked Diego Galeano of Baylor. He is tied for 10th in Minnesota history in singles wins with 96.
Spec, a native of Maribor, Slovenia, is 30-5 in singles play on the season, including 21-2 in dual matches. A First-Team All-Big Ten selection, he will go into the Gophers' NCAA Tournament opener against Princeton riding a 13-match winning streak. Spec is currently ranked 57th nationally.
