Gophers Shut Out Penn State in Road Win

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The No. 29-ranked Minnesota tennis team rebounded from its first Big Ten loss of the season Friday by dispatching 49th-ranked Penn State, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at PSU's Sarni Tennis Center. The Gophers upped their 2015 record to 15-6 with a 6-1 Big Ten mark.
The victory was the Maroon and Gold's third road win and their sixth shutout. Minnesota now has wins over nine ranked opponents this spring.
For the 17th time in 21 matches, the Gophers earned a doubles competition win. No. 49-ranked Mathieu Froment and Jack Hamburg defeated Alex Fennell and Aws Laaribi at No. 1 to begin the afternoon. After the Nittany Lions earned a win at No. 3, 76th-ranked Felix Corwin and Leandro Toledo clinched the doubles point with a tiebreaker win at No. 2.
No. 25-ranked Toledo extended Minnesota's lead in the top position with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Fennell. Froment put the Gophers on the brink of a team win with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Roman Trkulja.
To secure the victory, Corwin toppled Tomas Hanzlik in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0.
The Gophers return to the courts next weekend with road matches against Michigan on Saturday and Michigan State on Sunday. Both contests begin at 11 a.m. CT.
