MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) --Six Gophers were recognized for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom on Thursday as the 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Teams were announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Hannah Brandt (women's hockey), Jessica Flakne (rowing), Mathieu Froment (men's tennis), Michael Kroells (wrestling), Lindsay Mable (women's gymnastics) and Jessica Plant (women's swimming & diving) were named to this year's Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Team with the University of Minnesota now boasting 14 total Academic All-District honorees this year. The six honorees are now eligible for Academic All-America accolades in June and will look to join Maxx Williams (football) as 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-Americans.
Brandt led the women's hockey team to the program's sixth national title in 2014-15. She ranked second in the nation with 74 points on 34 goals and 40 assists as a junior. Named a Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award finalist for the third-straight season, Brandt was also honored as an AHCA/CCM First Team All-American, All-USCHO and All-WCHA First Team honoree, and the WCHA Player of the Year for the second-straight year. A right-handed center from Vadnais Heights, Minn., Brandt became just the seventh Gopher in program history to surpass the 200-career point mark this season. She enters her senior season ranked fifth all-time with 221 career points. The two-time WCHA Scholar Athlete and WCHA All-Academic Team honoree is studying health and wellness through the University of Minnesota's Inter-College Program and holds a 3.68 GPA.
Flakne, a native of Maple Plain, Minn., is a member of the Gophers' First Varsity Eight boat that is set to compete at the Big Ten Championships this weekend in Indianapolis, Ind. The junior is a CRCA Scholar Athlete and was selected to the 2014 Academic All-Big Ten team. Flakne was a member of the 1v8 boat that was named the Big Ten Boat of the Week on March 18. She holds a 3.90 GPA in her coursework toward a genetics/cell biology degree.
Froment finished his career for the Gopher men's tennis team with 60 career singles wins and a 64-40 mark in doubles. The senior from Longwy, France was consistently atop the team's doubles lineup and is ranked 37th nationally alongside Jack Hamburg. The finance and risk management insurance major has two earned two Top Five Awards for having one of the top five grade point averages among University of Minnesota male student-athletes (3.84 GPA this year), two Big Ten Distinguished Scholar awards and is a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete.
Kroells, a redshirt sophomore from Belle Plaine, Minn., stepped up to fill big shoes for Gopher wrestling this season -- both literally and figuratively. With the graduation of Tony Nelson, two-time national champ and four-time All-American, Kroells became the Gophers' starting heavyweight in 2014-15. In his new role, Kroells wrestled more matches (44) and more matches against ranked opponents (23) than anyone else on the Minnesota roster. In the postseason, he outperformed his seed at both the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Championships, finishing eighth and earning All-America honors in the national tournament. Away from the mat, Kroells is an aerospace engineering major who has maintained a 3.9 GPA during his three years at the U of M. Earlier this spring, Kroells was named Academic All-Big Ten for the second-straight year.
Mable capped a successful junior campaign as she competed as the lone represented from the University of Minnesota at the NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. Mable was named the 2015 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year after earning six league weekly honors. At the conference championships, the junior defended her vault title and earned a share of the floor exercise title en route to a runner-up finish in the all-around competition. Mable is a three-time First Team All-Big Ten honoree and has earned ten All-America laurels throughout her career, including four regular-season honors this year. The Colorado Gymnastics Institute alumna ended the 2015 season with 31 individual event wins and 11 all-around crowns. Mable spent two weeks in the top spot of the national all-around rankings and broke her own school record all-around score in February when she tallied a 39.675 in front of a home crowd at the Sports Pavilion. Off the competition floor, Mable is a dedicated student and has earned two Academic All-Big Ten accolades. The elementary education major was named a 2014 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and holds a 3.77 GPA. Mable was the only junior to be nominated for the prestigious Honda Sports Award for gymnastics in 2015.
Plant, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, is a Rhodes Scholarship finalist, a two-time Academic All-American, and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. She received the Big Ten's Wayne Duke Scholarship award and was announced as the University of Minnesota's recipients of the Big Ten Conference postgraduate scholarship. She is finishing her final undergraduate academic semester with a 4.0 GPA in her coursework toward her art history and classical civilizations degrees. Plant plans to pursue graduate work in art history and archaeology. In the pool, Plant was a member of the Golden Gophers' 800 freestyle relay team that won the Big Ten title. She is a three-time First-Team All-American and has been named to All-Big Ten first- and second-teams during her career.
