Gophers Wrap Action at Devil's Lake Challenge

BARABOO, Wis. -- The University of Minnesota women's rowing team notched four second-place finishes in races against host Wisconsin and Michigan State Saturday at the Devil's Lake Challenge in Baraboo, Wis. It was the final event for the Golden Gophers prior to the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind., on May 16-17.
The Big Ten squads battled whitecap cross-headwind conditions in the first 500 meters of each race, with the water smoothing out by the midway point of the course, though it remained gusty throughout the event.
The Gophers' First Varsity Eight boat placed second behind No. 9 Wisconsin with a time of 7:03, which was eight seconds ahead of Michigan State's time of 7:11 and eight seconds behind the Badgers' winning time of 6:55.
Despite battling early mishaps that put it a length behind early in the race, Minnesota's Second Varsity Eight boat pulled even with the Spartans at the half-way point before pulling ahead of Michigan State to place second with a time of 7:18. Wisconsin crossed first in 7:09.
The First Varsity Four also notched a second-place finish with a time of 8:38, which was seven seconds ahead of the Spartans' boat, while the Second Varsity Four's time of 8:46 was also good enough for second place.
Minnesota's Third Varsity Four, Second Novice Eight and First Novice Eight boats also competed in the event, finishing with times of 9:05, 8:48 and 7:45, respectively. Â
The Gophers will have a week off from competition before heading to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championships May 16-17.    Â
