Mead Punches Ticket to Beijing

EUGENE, Ore. (GopherSports.com) -Former Gopher All-American Hassan Mead punched his ticket to the 2015 IIAF World Championships, Aug. 22-30, in Beijing, China with a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters on Thursday at the 2015 USATF Outdoor Championships.

Mead, who runs professionally for Nike's Oregon Track Club Elite program, clocked a 28:16.54.

Meanwhile, fellow OTC Elite runners and former Gopher All-Americans Ben Blankenship and Harun Abda advanced in the 1,500 meters and the 800 meters, respectively.

Blankenship paced his 1,500-meter heat from start to finish and posted the third-fastest overall qualifying time at 3:44.86. He'll run in Saturday's finals at 4:20 p.m. CT.

Abda finished third in his 800-meter heat to earn an automatic bid to Friday's semifinals at 10:44 p.m. The 13-time All-American ran a 1:48.66 while two-time Gopher All-American Goaner Deng actually ran a faster time at 1:48.62, but came in fifth in his heat and failed to earn a qualifying bid.

Incoming Minnesota freshman Shane Streich is also in action on Friday in the men's junior 800 meters at 4:45 p.m.
