EUGENE, Ore. (GopherSports.com) --Former Gopher All-American Ben Blankenship and incoming Gopher freshman Shane Streich closed out the USATF Outdoor Championships and the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships, respectively, with top-five finishes on Saturday at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Blankenship just missed qualifying for the 2015 IIAF World Championships with a fourth-place finish in the 1,500 meter finals. The Stillwater native clocked a 3:38.78 -- just behind Leonel Manzano's third-place time of 3:38.76 and Robby Andrews' runner-up time of 3:38.75.
Streich, meanwhile, ran his second-fastest 800 meters ever with a 1:50.29 to finish fifth in the junior 800 meter finals. Streich is a six-time state champion from Waseca, Minn., who will be joining the Gophers beginning in 2015-16.
Fellow Gophers All-American alum Hassan Mead, who qualified for the 2015 IIAF World Championships in August with a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters, will not run in Sunday's 5,000-meter competition.
