Gophers Take Fourth in CGA Academic Awards

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team finished fourth overall in the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) National Academic top ten list with a combined grade point average of 3.307.
Minnesota led the pack of the four Big Ten teams that landed within the top 10 also including Ohio State, Nebraska and Michigan.
Of the five teams that earned Honorable Mention, three hailed from the Big Ten including Iowa, Illinois-Champaign and Penn State.
Earning the highest collective GPA were the gymnasts from William and Mary who tallied an average of 3.458. Springfield (3.389), Stanford (3.373), Minnesota (3.307) and Navy (3.286) rounded out the top five.
The CGA recognized 65 individual gymnasts who earned a GPA of 3.50-4.0 with first team All-American Scholar Athlete honors, while 63 gymnasts were named to the second team, earning a GPA of 3.20-3.49.
Jack Metcalf, Yaroslav Pochinka, Luke Aldrich, Steve Jaciuk, Sean Bauer and Ellis Mannon all made it onto the first team list for the Maroon and Gold.
Of the 65 first team gymnasts, only four notched a perfect GPA of 4.0 including Metcalf of the Gophers.
Five more Golden Gophers representatives were named second team All-Americans including Alex Wittenberg, Joel Gagnon, Shashank Yallamraju, Ryan Bergman and Jack Kramer.
