Gophers Announce 2016 Competition Schedule

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team announced its 2016 competition schedule Monday afternoon. The Gophers will host six home meets, as well as the 2016 NCAA Regionals at the Sports Pavilion.

"We have another great schedule for the 2016 season," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "Not only will we continue to face great competitiors within the Big Ten, but we are able to begin our home meets with hosting Iowa State and bring our Colorado athletes home for a great weekend at Denver and Air Force. The highlight of our home schedule is the NCAA Regional Championship. We are thrilled to be hosting and give our fans the opportunity to see and incredible competition."

The Gophers will begin their unofficial season with the Intrasquad meet on Sat., Jan. 2 at the Sports Pavilion, followed by three home meets where they will host Iowa State (Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m.), Maryland (Jan. 16 at 4:00 p.m.) and Michigan State (Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m.).

Concluding their four-meet homestand, the Gophers will hit the road and head to Columbus, Ohio to face Ohio State on Sat., Jan. 30 at 4:00 p.m. (ET).

Returning home on Sat., Feb. 6, Minnesota will welcome Big Ten foe, Illinois, for a 4:00 p.m. meet.

On Fri., Feb. 12, Minnesota will travel to Lincoln, Neb. to partake in the Rumble & Tumble Meet hosted by the Nebraska Cornhuskers, followed by a trip to Ames, Iowa on Fri., Feb. 19 to face Iowa State.

The Best of Minnesota home meet is slated for Sat., Feb. 27 at 4:00 p.m., where the Gophers will honor their senior class as well as host Gustavus Adolphus, Hamline University and Winona State University which will be sure to highlight exciting Minnesota talent.

The following two meets will be on the road, as the Gophers will head to Denver, Colo. on Fri., March 4 for a 7:00 p.m. (MST) meet, quickly backed up by action against the Air Force in Colorado Springs on Sun., March 6 at 1:00 p.m. (MST).

Upon finishing their final regular season meet, Minnesota will head to University Park, Pa. for the 2016 Big Ten Qualifier, where they will go up against Penn State, Iowa, Michigan and Rutgers. The Big Ten Championships will be held the following weekend on Sat., March 19 in Lincoln, Neb.

Gopher fans will not want to forget to mark their calendars for Sat., April 2, when Minnesota will host NCAA Regionals, highlighting the best collegiate talent all under the Sports Pavilion roof.

Pending qualification, the NCAA Championships will be held April 14-16 in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Gopher women's gymnastics goes into the 2016 season with high expectations after a strong show in 2015. Last season, the team finished ranked at No. 17 in the country with four first-place finishes.

Senior Lindsay Mable had a special season, winning 31 individual events, as she was named an All-American, Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and advanced to the NCAA Championships. Mable returns with fellow seniors Madeline Hanley and Hanna Nordquist.

Along with the 12 returning gymnasts for the Gophers, Minnesota welcomes two newcomers, Selena Ung and Rachel Cutler.
