Cross Country Camp Blog: Closing Time
9/8/2015 12:00:00 AM | Men's Cross Country
Training never ends for the University of Minnesota men's cross country program, and this week is no different for the Gophers.
While Minnesota celebrated a team and individual title on Tuesday night at the Bob Timmons Dual Classic, Wednesday morning saw the team wake up in Lawrence, Kan., and fall asleep in Nevis, Minn., as the team took off for its annual preseason camp in Northern Minnesota.
Aaron Bartnik (photos), Charlie Lawrence (Sunday notes and quotes) and Sam Carlson (Monday notes and quotes) checked in as the Gophers closed up camp for the season ahead of Friday's Oz Memorial at Les Bolstad Golf Course.

Sunday Blog from Charlie Lawrence
"Heading into the final two days of camp, there were still a lot of activities that had yet to be completed. The Nevis Cup had reached the final two events, someone still had to be crowned the individual champion of the camp badminton tournament, while still knocking out two runs on the day."

"The team began their second to last day of camp by driving out to the Paul Bunyan State Forest for an hour of running. At the conclusion of the morning run, the team took a team photo that will definitely go down as one of the best pictures from the week of camp. Once the team returned back to Belle Shores Resort they indulged in yet another delicious lunch made by Coach Plasencia's sister, Bunch."

"After yet another terrific lunch, the team wasted no time in continuing the sixth event of the Nevis Cup, doubles badminton. The Maroon squad ended up winning the doubles badminton and securing the second annual Nevis Cup Title."

"After the completion of the Nevis Cup, the individual badminton tournament resumed. This year nobody on the U's cross country team could stop Coach Plasencia's son, Alex, as he was the victor of individual tournament and the only one to not have to jump into the lake."

"After the badminton tournament concluded the team completed their second run of the day, ate yet another great meal, and enjoyed the rest of the evening and night sitting around a campfire. The events at the campfire began with the incoming freshman singing their high school fight songs, followed by some classic camp fire stories. Overall, it was another great day to be a University of Minnesota cross country runner."

Monday Blog from Sam Carlson
"The morning of our final day at Belle Shores dawned beautiful, bluebird, and chilly. Perfect cross country weather, as if all of northern Minnesota was anticipating the morning tempo run that would conclude our time at camp for the year."
"After the run there was much scrambling as everyone chipped in to sweep, wash dishes, pack, and prepare for the ride home. Bunch made sure that everyone was refueled with an awesome leftover meal to use up the last of the food, and lunch concluded with the team singing Happy Birthday to Wayde Hall while enjoying cake and ice cream for all who saved room."
|
"Then it was down to the lake shore for the annual singing of the Minnesota Rouser, led by the incoming freshman, of course, before we hopped in the vans to drive back to campus a little after noon. Ski-U-Mah! We are extremely grateful to Wayne and Irma, our hosts at Belle Shores Resort for allowing us to return year after year, and also to Bunch and Robbie for their continued efforts in cooking two meals for us each day."
