MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 23 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team earned the second victory of the 2016 season and first of Big Ten action, as they defeated the No. 25 Maryland Terrapins, 195.425-193.150, Saturday at the Sports Pavilion.

"I'm really pleased with where we're at right now," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "We had great hit percentages on every event and we improved our team score over seven tenths from last weekend. This is exactly the momentum we want to be building this time of the year."

The Gophers outscored Maryland on Vault (48.625), Uneven Bars (48.850), Beam (48.850) and Floor (49.100). Throughout the entirety of the meet, the Maroon and Gold never trailed.

Senior Lindsay Mable swept each event as well, to include the All-Around title with a final tally of 39.400. Fellow senior, Hanna Nordquist, tied with Mable for the top spot on the Balance Beam with a 9.850.

On the Vault, Mable claimed her second individual title of the night with a 9.800, followed by Maryland's Kathy Tang, who notched a 9.775. Junior Rachel Haines scored a 9.750 to finish third overall.

On the Uneven Bars, Mable earned top honors scoring a 9.850 followed by junior Bailie Holst, who placed second with a 9.825. Rounding out the top three was sophomore Abby DeMuse, who earned a 9.800.

Through the first two rotations, the Gophers held a 97.475-96.550 lead.

Minnesota continued their success on the Beam, with Mable and Nordquist clinching the top two spots followed by sophomore Ciara Gardner, who earned a 9.825.

On Floor, the final event for the Maroon and Gold, Mable claimed first place with a 9.900, the highest mark of the night. Gardner earned a 9.850, finishing second, with junior Bailey Abernathy coming in at third with a 9.800.

"Coming into tonight, we just wanted to be really consistent and moving forward, we'll continue to focus on the little things such as the half-tenths that we know we can keep working on," said Hansen. "We're right where we want to be."

LOOKING AHEAD
Next Saturday, January 23, the Gophers will host the Michigan State Spartans as the team concludes their homestand. The first rotation is set to start at 6:30 p.m. CT at the Sports Pavilion.
