The University of Minnesota Gophers had an interesting weekend out in New York at the ITA Kick-Off. A snowstorm hit the east coast causing Saturday's matches to be postponed. Today the matches were moved to USTA National Tennis Center with the Gophers falling 4-0 to host Columbia.
Despite the score, the Gophers were competitive on the day with doubles coming down to the wire and having three singles spots win the first set before seeing their matches go unfinished.
Doubles were close in all three matches to get the day started between the two highly ranked teams. Minnesota got their lone victory of the day from the freshmen duo of Justyn Levin and Josip Krstanovic pulling out a 7-6 (5) victory over Miguel Alda and Eric Rubin. The win makes the duo 2-0 together in the early season.
In the No. 2 doubles spot Marino Alepza and Ruben Weber fell 6-4 to No. 26 Mike Vermeer and Michal Rolski. Columbia eked out a 7-6 (6) win in the No. 1 spot to seal the victory with No. 20 Felix Corwin and Matic Spec taking the loss.
In singles Spec, Weber and Alpeza all won their first set. Spec took his 6-2 in the No. 1 spot, Weber 7-6 in the No. 2 spot and Alpeza 7-5 in the 6 spot. Unfortunately for the Maroon and Gold, Columbia was strong in the other three spots. Corwin fell (6-3, 6-2) to Victor Pham in the No. 2 spot, Krstantovic lost (6-3, 6-1) to Vermeer in the No. 4 and Levin dropped his match (6-3, 6-2) to Richard Pham in the No 5.
Columbia will play Stanford tomorrow with the winner advancing to the ITA Team Indoor Championships.
Minnesota and Virginia Tech will not play their consolation match due to flight issues.
