Hasz Leads Gophers at Nuttycombe Invitational

MADISON, Wis. - Freshman Megan Hasz earned a top-30 individual finish to lead the University of Minnesota women's cross country team at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, clocking a career-best six-kilometer time of 20:44.0 for 28th place. The Golden Gophers finished 16th of 31 teams at Wisconsin's Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course Friday afternoon.
Behind M. Hasz, two more Gophers secured places among the top 55 in a field of over 200 runners. Fellow rookie Bethany Hasz ran a career-best 20:54.7 for 42nd place, and redshirt junior Madeline Strandemo posted a season-best time of 21:00.9 for 55th place.
Redshirt freshman Abby Kargol continued her strong season with her third-straight finish among the Gophers' top five. Kargol ran a career-best 21:42.1 as Minnesota's fourth runner in 124th place, followed by redshirt sophomore Tamara Gorman, who recorded a time of 21:48.9 (136th place) in her first 6K race of the season, to round out Minnesota's scoring runners.
Redshirt sophomores Bailey Ness (21:57.7) and Patty O'Brien (22:09.3) also ran season-best times as the sixth and seventh Gophers today.
National No. 4 Washington won the team title with 124 points, followed by No. 3 NC State (166), top-ranked Providence (170), No. 11 New Mexico (207), and No. 21 Baylor (228) to make up the top five teams. Boise State's Brenna Peloquin won the individual title in 20:00.8 after also taking home top individual honors at the Roy Griak Invitational.
The Nuttycombe Invitational also included an open 6K race. Led by Emily Betz (21:45.1, season-best) and Molly Eastman (21:51.7, PR) in 11th and 13th place, respectively, the Gophers finished sixth of 12 teams.
In total, the Gophers combined for nine career-best times and nine season-best times in the championship race and the open race Friday.
Minnesota also has a group racing at the Tori Neubauer Invitational in Ettrick, Wis., on Saturday morning as competition continues this weekend.
