Minnesota women's gymnastics welcomes eight fresh faces to their roster this season, including seven freshmen and one transfer. Ivy Lu joins the Gophers from her hometown of Montreal, Quebec. Get to know Lu in this Q&A.

Gopher Sports: How did you get into gymnastics?

Ivy Lu: My older cousin was a gymnast, and I remember going to watch her practice and wanting to do just like her! Also, as a child, I was very energetic and was always flipping in the house, so my parents decided to bring me to a gym where I could practice in a safe environment.

GS: Why did you choose Minnesota?

IL: I chose Minnesota mostly because of how great the team is, including the coaching staff, and also how amazing this school is.

GS: What are your goals for this season?

IL: My goal for this season is to contribute the best that I can to the team on bars and beam, and to continue to work hard during practices and build on my consistency. I also want to enjoy every moment with the team and create unforgettable memories with them.

GS: What have you learned from your time at Minnesota so far?

IL: I have learned quite a lot so far. I wasn't able to join the team until late August, it was definitely a challenge for me to adjust to everything at first. But after a while, I have learned a lot on how to deal and adjust to different situations, and also a lot on the whole team aspect.

GS: What events do you compete in?

IL: I have had a few injuries in the past that have kept me from training and competing on all four events. I am currently training on uneven bars and beam, and am looking forward to contribute on these two events in competitions. Bars has always been my favourite event!

GS: Who has been your greatest supporter?

IL: My greatest supporters have definitely always been my parents since they have sacrificed so much in order for me to reach my goals. I wouldn't be who I am today if it weren't because of all the support they have given me through these years.

GS: What are you looking forward to this season?

IL: As a team, we are for sure looking forward to make it to nationals again! I am also looking forward to enjoying the whole experience with my team and creating memories that will last a lifetime!
